Lesson 7 | Final Project

Now that you’ve practiced all of these different flowers, it’s time to bring them together into one beautiful painting! I won’t be doing much instructing in this video, but I’ve sped up the process of creating my own painting so that you can watch and see how I laid it out, layered, and added detail.

A few rules of thumb when creating a final painting:

  • Create a few practice sketches to get a feel for the composition before embarking on the final piece.

  • You may want to lightly sketch your composition on your paper with pencil before painting. Just be aware that pencil tends to show through watercolor, so draw as lightly as possible.

  • Build up your color from light to dark, starting with the lightest colors (yellows / oranges) and then moving on to the darker colors (purples, greens).

  • If you don’t want colors to blend, make sure they’re totally dry before adding layers.

Most of all, have FUN, and don’t worry if you “mess up.” You can always grab a fresh piece of paper and start again.

If you choose to share your finished piece on Instagram or Facebook, use the hashtag #paintwithmaywefly so we can all see your beautiful work! Congratulations on finishing this workshop. :)
