Homes are deeply cherished places and storehouses of memory, very worthy subjects to learn how to paint. A home portrait is a beautiful way to preserve and honor these special places while creating an heirloom piece that can be passed down for years to come.
I have had the privilege of painting many home portraits over the years, and in this course I will be breaking down my process and showing you exactly how I create them from start to finish. Each section of the course will build on the next as we cover everything from stretching paper to creating textures like brick, stone, and wood.
My goal is that by the end of this workshop you will have the skills to:
Understand the start to finish process of creating a piece, from stretching paper to removing it from the board
Accurately draw your home and transfer it to your watercolor paper
Mix color and build a palette
Paint each element of a building (windows, doors, textures, etc)
Paint a variety of landscape elements
Confidently paint not only your own home, but any of your favorite buildings
Click the headings in the menu below to see an overview of the lessons we’ll be covering each week:
Stretching paper
Creating a wash
Mixing color
Using brushes (flat, round)
Color values
Working with rulers / triangles
Basic composition strategies
Creating shadows
Transferring your drawing to your watercolor paper
Working with masking fluid
Material studies: brick, stone, shingles, glass, wood
Landscape elements: trees, shrubs, grass

Course lessons will be pre-recorded so that you can go at your own pace. They’ll be released on a weekly basis, but you will have lifetime access to them once the course is complete.
There will be no live sessions for this course, but if you would like additional one-on-one support, you can schedule time with me here.
Thanks for your interest in learning from me! Over the past decade as an instructor I’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students how to paint with watercolors, and I truly believe that anyone (yes anyone) can learn how!
My background is in architecture, so creating home portraits has been a fun way to combine my love of buildings with my love of watercolor. I can’t wait to teach you how to paint your own home!
You will be responsible for providing your own supplies for this course. Below is a list of everything you’ll need. (Please know that these are recommendations only. Feel free to use whatever brands are your favorite or you already have on hand)!
Supply List:
Practice watercolor paper (140# weight, any brand)
Mixing palette (any kind of smooth surface will work)
Optional Supplies:
Pencil sharpener
Other shades of watercolor pencils (dark gray, brown) - you can also find these at Hobby Lobby
Paper stretching supplies (staple gun + staples, gator board)
This is an online course! Lessons will be pre-recorded and released over several weeks. New material will arrive on November 12, November 19, November 26, and December 3.
No, this is a fully pre-recorded course. However, I offer optional 45 minute one-on-one sessions if you need additional support, which you can learn more about here.
Yes. Please feel free to use whatever you have on hand! If you’d like my recommendations, you can find them here.
One wonderful thing about watercolor painting is that it is fairly mess-free. You may want to protect your painting surface with paper or plastic, but watercolor paint doesn’t stain and wipes up very easily.
This course is suitable for beginners, but some level of experience with either drawing or painting (in any medium) is recommended.
You can expect to spend about 1-2 hours going through lessons each week, with an additional 2-4 hours of practice time if you choose to do each project and attend the live weekly session. Please feel free to go at your own pace!
$97 USD, which includes lifetime access to the course materials.
Absolutely! Just send me an email and I’ll provide you with all the info you need.
